A Brief History of New Lexington
Lexington Street Grammar School, the third school in El Monte, was first built in 1880. Complete with bell tower, it held an edifice that seemed to proclaim, "Let no one enter here who is not prepared to be a scholar." That bell is now housed in front of the district office. It wasn't until much later in 1908-09, that Lexington School was built, a two-story brick building housing 250 students.
